ATX West - MD&M West Presents an In-Depth Look at New Medtech Innovations - from Nanorobots to 3D-Printed Knees
Largest Medical Design and Manufacturing Event in the World Hosts Expert Talks, Including Panel of Leading Physicians Discussing Emerging Medical Technologies
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) West today highlights some of the most cutting-edge medical technology to be presented at the conference in Anaheim, February 9-11. A full-day conference track, New Product Development Technologies and NexGen Applications, explores how technological developments are presenting opportunities for medical innovation and new forms of treatment—bridging the gap between electronics and biology.
A highly anticipated panel, The Doctor is In - Here's What Physicians Really Think About the Future of Medical Innovation, will discuss how emerging technologies will improve population health and lead to medical breakthroughs in the next two to five years. The panelists will discuss the new need for medical devices within specific treatment areas and how connected devices enhance healthcare overall. Moderated by Rania Nasis, CEO of Starlings and Chair of the Society of Physician Entrepreneurs, panelists include:
Yaniv Bar-Cohen, M.D., FAAP, FACC, FHRS, Co-Director, Southern California Consortium for Technology and Innovation in Pediatrics (CTIP)
James Kelley, M.D., MBA, Chief Operating Officer, L-Nutra
Mark Humayun, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Ophthalmology, Biomedical Engineering, and Cell and Neurobiology; Director, USC Institute For Biomedical Therapeutics; Co-Director, USC Eye Institute; Recipient of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation
Targeted Treatment via Nanorobots inside Your Body
Dr. Kwanoh Kim, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin's Cockrell School of Engineering will present a case study, Nanorobots: A Bottoms-Up Approach, about how miniscule robots can seek out problem cells and provide targeted treatment inside a patient's body. Dr. Kim will examine the growing trend towards using nanoparticles to carry molecules or drugs from a medical device, and how coupling nanometers with advanced medical equipment can create multifunctional biomedical technology. Dr. Kim's work on nanomotors was nominated as a finalist for the SXSW Interactive Innovation Award and ranked third on BBC Focus Magazine's 2014 list of ten discoveries that will shape the future.

More Innovations at Center Stage: 3D Printing a Knee vs. 3D Printing a Drug
Beyond the conference programming, theaters on the expo floor will explore other revolutionary developments in the medtech space. At Center Stage, attendees will see real-world examples of medical technology at work, including models of 3D printed devices on the market, including a 3D printed knee, as well as the first 3D printed drug, which was launched in August 2015. The session will explore the differences and similarities between the regulatory strategies of 3D printed devices and drugs.
