Five Tips on How Automotive Manufacturers Can Protect Critical Components for the Long Haul
Mitsubishi’s RP System™ Safeguards Auto Parts, Sensitive Electronics, and Other Industrial Products, From Rust and Oxidation During Shipping and Long-Term Storage
New York, NY (November 7, 2022) As the leaves begin to change colors and the days get shorter, the opportunities for car enthusiasts to take their classic cars out for a cruise around the neighborhood or to drive their convertibles with the top down on the highway become less and less. The race is on to put their prized possession away before the season's first snowfall.
Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, the maker of RP System, offers auto manufacturers five tips for safeguarding sensitive components against rust and oxidation during extreme conditions or extended periods of time.
• Consider Protection via Packaging. While some companies use oils or other methods to protect their components, consider using specialty packaging, which can provide extra protection during shipping and storage.
• Look for a Dual Absorber. Where there is moisture, there is oxygen, which can lead to rust and performance degradation. Protect against both oxygen AND moisture damage by choosing a dual absorber.
• Ensure Customizability. One size does not fit all. Look for a supplier that can customize an absorber to meet your product's needs. Including an accurately sized absorber for your product will ensure proper oxygen and moisture absorption.
• Think Long Term. Protecting your components through cheaper methods may be easy in the short term, but implementing high-quality, secure, and reliable protection is crucial to a company's product performance and larger goals, including sustainability efforts.
• Audit Your Processes. Once you have a dependable long-term protection plan in place, consider your current manufacturing practices. Do you employ a just-in-time model? If replacement components are able to be stored safely for months, would producing parts in bulk be an option to help clear up line space for new generation part production? Now is the time to think outside the box.
"With the current movement in the automotive industry, we are confident RP System is a dependable, versatile packaging solution that can provide auto manufacturers the support they need for protecting their most critical components during shipping and long-term storage," said Sean Hael, General Manager at Mitsubishi Gas Chemical America, Inc. "Now more than ever, we recommend auto manufacturers audit their protection and manufacturing methods to ensure delivery of the highest quality product to their customers."
Automotive components such as diesel injection pumps, transmission gear pumps and values, in-vehicle electric components, printed circuit boards, and flexible substrate are just a few that are critical to the automotive industry's success. Using a packaging technology like RP System can help protect these part types from exposure to oxygen- and moisture -based degradation, which can be present during extended time in shipping containers and warehouses.
Manufactured in Japan and introduced for the first time to North America in 2021, RP System protects a variety of automotive, electronic, and industrial components from oxidation and corrosion. RP System uses a gas barrier bag that withstands oxygen and moisture penetration and a customed RP agent composed of oxygen-and moisture-absorbing compounds. Once sealed properly, RP System provides a protected environment for critical components to be shipped safely and stored long-term.
While car owners are looking for that long-term protection and peace of mind during the changing seasons, auto manufacturers now have a packaging solution that essentially gives their components an extended warranty.

T.J. Davies' Retention Knobs
Our retention knobs are manufactured above international standards or to machine builder specifications. Retention knobs are manufactured utilizing AMS-6274/AISI-8620 alloy steel drawn in the United States. Threads are single-pointed on our lathes while manufacturing all other retention knob features to ensure high concentricity. Our process ensures that our threads are balanced (lead in/lead out at 180 degrees.) Each retention knob is carburized (hardened) to 58-62HRC, and case depth is .020-.030. Core hardness 40HRC. Each retention knob is coated utilizing a hot black oxide coating to military specifications. Our retention knobs are 100% covered in black oxide to prevent rust. All retention knob surfaces (not just mating surfaces) have a precision finish of 32 RMA micro or better: ISO grade 6N. Each retention knob is magnetic particle tested and tested at 2.5 times the pulling force of the drawbar. Certifications are maintained for each step in the manufacturing process for traceability.
