New product mitigates power failure

Power distribution specialist ide Systems has launched a new generator connection point (GCP) to mitigate downtime caused by mains power failures. The product, which is ideal for office buildings, healthcare facilities and retail blocks, allows backup generators to be quickly and easily connected in the event of an unforeseen electrical failure. ide Systems is the only manufacturer to offer this type of connection unit in the UK.

The new GCP is available in 400A and 800A three-phase models, named the GCP400 and GCP800, respectively. The units include five drain powerlock connections to safely connect backup generators to 30x10mm copper bars. Each model is fitted in a high visibility stainless steel enclosure that can be easily mounted to walls on either the inside or outside of the building.

GCPs are designed to provide a fast and effective contingency plan for businesses wanting to avoid costly downtime. In the event of a power failure, temporary-power generator suppliers can connect the required sized generator directly into a GCP instead of hardwiring it into the main distribution board. This allows engineers to restore power shortly after the generator arrives, without spending hours hardwiring the generator into the building's electrical supply.

"While there has traditionally never been a good time for a business to suffer a power failure, the demands of modern business mean there has never been a worse time than now," explained Matt Collins, business development manager at ide Systems. "Whether a business operates in the healthcare or legal sector, computers have become critical to most jobs. This digitalisation of jobs means that any loss of power has a significant detrimental impact on business performance.

"Traditionally, power faults have forced engineers to rewire electrical infrastructure to connect it to a back-up generator. As many businesses simply rent these from suppliers, it means that facilities managers must contact the generator supplier, wait for the arrival and then wait for installation before power can be restored. This process can take hours, which results in unproductive and costly downtime.

"GCPs minimise this downtime by eliminating the need for generator hardwiring. The GCP can be installed on the outside or inside of the building, so suppliers can arrive and quickly connect the emergency generator, which can take as little as fifteen minutes. It also reduces the health and safety risks by eliminating the need to run wiring through corridors and stairwells."

The GCPs offered by ide Systems have a power range of 400A-800A and are specified, designed and installed by the companys engineers to ensure the right product is fitted correctly. Facilities managers can also request GCPs with either manual or automatic changeover.
